Echo moves into Cape floor slab market

THE Echo Group, South Africa’s largest manufacturer of hollow-core concrete floor slabs, has acquired ownership control of the Cape manufacturer Topfloor Concrete Ltd, giving Echo a national footprint in the highly competitive precast and prestressed floor industry.

Echo already has two manufacturing plants in Gauteng and one in Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Echo chairman Peter Lord said Echo expertise acquired over more than 26 years as the pioneer in the hollow-core floor slab sector would immediately be injected into the Cape operation, widening its product range and market penetration over the entire Western Cape region.

“In addition to Topfloor’s Concrete Ltd existing products, entirely new products developed by Echo engineers will in future be available, among them a new ground-beam foundation system designed expressly for social housing,” Peter Lord added. “Echo’s take-over of Topfloor Concrete Ltd will enable the Cape Town operation to play a greater role in the Western Cape region’s government-funded social housing programmes.”

Peter Lord added that the Echo takeover would enable the group to spread some of the fixed-costs of operating its four manufacturing plants, securing its position as the country’s lowest-cost producer of precast flooring.

Topfloor Concrete Ltd, established in Belville South in 1996, will retain its name, identity and top management, headed by managing director Renn Holtzhausen.
